a. Btry C, 1st Bn, 8th Arty: DS.
b. 1st Bn, 8th Arty (-): GS.
c. Co B, 65th Engr.8. INTELLIGENCE.
a. Intelligence Prior to the Operation: It was known that the VC had developed a centrally directed plan to disrupt the national elections scheduled for 11 September 1966. Increased acts of terrorism, assassination and attacks on outposts were expected. The majority of the VC anti-election activity was anticipated to be conducted by local guerrilla forces. The Boi Loi Woods was considered a VC storage and staging area.
b. Terrain and Weather.(1) The objective areas were generally void of significant relief. Routes of friendly movement were selected adjacent to wooded areas to avoid excessively muddy fields and wet rice paddies. Mechanized movement was often feasible in rice paddies if the vehicles did not track behind each other. Movement through the wooded areas was characterized by excessively saturated ground and dense undergrowth. The dense wooded areas and large bomb craters often channelized vehicular movement.
(2) Many foot and ox cart trails exist within the Boi Loi Woods. These trails usually run from the edge of the woods directly into the center of the area. Trails often appeared to have been recently used.
(3) Landing sites for sampans were located near the northeastern portion of the Boi Loi Woods where the Saigon River parallels the area. This river offers an ideal means for enemy movement of supplies and personnel in and out of the Boi Loi area.
(4) Although bunkers, trenches and spider holes were found throughout the area, no significant tunnel networks were located. Trenches predominately paralleled the tree lines and were located throughout VC base camp areas.
(5) Thunderstorms were often encountered in the afternoons and evenings. Ground fog was prevalent along the streams and normally persisted until midmorning. Rain hampered command and control helicopters on several occasions and one air strike was canceled because of low ceiling.
c. Enemy Situation During the Operation.
(1) During the initial stages of the operation the battalion encountered sporadic small arms and rifle grenade fire and antitank mines along the northwest route of advance. No sizable enemy force was encountered during this period. On 20 Sep 66, interrogation of the villagers in the vicinity of the first base camp indicated that VC movements were generally north to south. The VC movements, consisting of small groups of five to six men, were habitually conducted at night. It could not be firmly established that VC supplies were being transported. An estimated VC platoon was encountered in grid square XT 5931. The enemy elected to evade contact and move east. Contact was again made when the VC base camp was discovered. The VC again evaded friendly forces and broke contact.
(2) The enemy has concentrated its efforts on harassing and defensive warfare. Because of the channelization of mechanized movement due to weather, terrain and obstacles, tactics of this nature were effective.
9. MISSION: 1st Bn (Mech) 5th Inf conducts S&D operations and raids in the 2d Bde AO. On order, assist in the destruction of VC forces fixed by 1/27th Inf Eagle Flights.
10. CONCEPT OF OPERATION: The operation was conducted in two phases.
Phase I: The battalion conducted S&D operations in Areas GREEN, WHITE, BLUE, BLACK, RED, ORANGE and YELLOW to preclude the presence of any large VC forces in these areas (Incl 1, Parts I and II, Operation Overlay).
PHASE II: The battalion conducts raids on Objectives 1-6 and mechanized reconnaissance in force on the periphery and into the Boi Loi Woods to locate VC base areas and fortifications (Incl 1, Parts I and II).

Of those injured, 18 were evacuated and 64 returned to duty. In the usual manner, a number of casualties by-passed the forward aid station and were evacuated directly to areas of definitive care. A few cases of heat cramps and one kidney stone occurrence emphasize the need for the men to maintain adequate water and salt intakes.
14. SPECIAL EQUIPMENT AND TECHNIQUES : None.
15. COMMANDER'S ANALYSIS.
a. Except for minor harassment by sporadic small arms and occasional light mortar fires, the VC will not engage the mechanized infantry battalion or elements thereof. When hard pressed, they will employ delaying tactics and break contact as soon as possible.
b. Extensive VC employment of antitank mines is the major threat to the operations of the mechanized infantry battalion. An increase in the size of the antitank mines has been noted over the past few months; this has resulted in a significantly higher percentage of APC's becoming a total loss after hitting mines. Personnel casualties remain relatively light, except in cases where aggravating factors occur (e.g. secondary explosions or fires resulting from the mine detonation).
c. Terrain trafficability during the peak of the rainy season restricts and channelizes tracked vehicle movement. Although somewhat restricted, mechanized operations are still possible.
16.RECOMMENDATIONS. None.
