Fifth Infantry - W.W. II - European Phase

On May 8, 1945 the German Army officially surrendered.  On that day the 5th Infantry found itself the farthest East of any American Infantry unit, at the bridgehead it fought for and won across the Inn River at Ernsthofen, Austria. In the U.S. you trained hard, in the European Theatre of Operations you fought hard.   You have engaged in every type of military operation save a retreat.  In rain, sleet, and snow, despite fatigue and peril, you have taken every objective.  You have upheld splendidly the traditions of the Fifth Infantry.  You have loyally supported me at all times and I appreciate it deeply.
You are good soldiers
