I read with interest the article about Roger Hayes receiving his Purple Heart. It brought back a flood of memories. I was there on that APC with Roger that day. I was about 3 feet away from him, so it is possible that the fragment that ricocheted into his arm is from the same AK47 round that hit me on my side. I caught 4 (minor) fragments.
During this same firefight, a round went through my helmet.
The cleaning rod shows the path. The exit hole is about the size of a quarter. It grazed my scalp and knocked me out for a few seconds. Bo Smith also had a round go through his helmet during this fight. John Lewis (our driver) was hit in the neck (also a ricochet).
