Born in Chicago, IL he resided with his family in Stoneham for 15 years before moving to North Andover in 1965 where he enlisted in the Army. He was a member of the sophomore class at North Andover High School. He underwent basic and advanced training at Fort Dix NJ. and Fort Devens MA. Specialist English was deployed to Vietnam in July 1966 and was due to return home in June 1967.
Army Specialist 4 James P. English of 21 Ash St. North Andover was killed on his 20th Birthday, April 22, when his personnel carrier struck a road mine. Awarded the Purple Heart Medal for head wounds suffered Sept 19 near Tay Ninh Vietnam. He was hospitalized a month before returning to combat duty from the second Battalion, 196th Light Infantry. He was the son of Patricia M. English and the late James L. English. Besides his mother he left four brothers, Kevin, Brendan, Michael, and Timothy English. SPC 4 James P. English was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. |
